When I was a teenager, my brother and I used to fly solo to visit our grandparents in Florida.
Being the overprotective sister that I am, I remember being offended the first time I learned that if the plane lost pressure, I had to put my oxygen mask on before assisting my brother with his.
It didn’t take long for me to learn the importance of taking care of myself first in this scenario.
If I really needed to save him, I’d be much more effective if I could breathe. As an adult, I’ve learned that this rule doesn’t just apply to flying with small children. If we want to show up as the best versions of ourselves (in our families, at work, in relationships, etc.), we have to tend to ourselves first.
Last week, I was forced to prioritize myself and to be completely honest, it was very difficult for me. I felt guilty because I didn’t think I was “doing enough” but the truth is, there was nothing I could do for others until I helped myself.
, have you ever struggled to put yourself first? If so, this week I’d like for you to prioritize yourself in at least one area of your life:
- Carve out 15 minutes of time to read or take a walk.
- Make your favorite meal…or order that pizza.
- Catch up with your friends or binge watch your favorite series.
- Finally do that one thing that will make your life easier.
Of course this is easier said than done. Our responsibilities don’t care about our self-care but we’re going to try anyway. Shoot me an email and let me know how you plan to take care of yourself first this week.
