Over the weekend, I had a conversation with a friend about the impact that running has at the community level. Specifically, we discussed measuring outcomes of running-focused programs that positively impact our neighborhoods.
I’ve been thinking a lot about that conversation because as I continue to build Strides, I want to ensure that it has a measurable (and positive) impact. Sure, we could measure success by counting the number of people that participate in the program: “This year, x people trained with Strides”. While I’d be
excited to get even just one person to train with us, I want other physical and mental health indicators to be part of the equation too.
That’s why I’m excited to share the four areas that Strides will use to measure impact.
Cardiovascular Health & Strength: Running is known to have positive impacts on heart health and despite what you may have heard, it can actually be good for your knees. If Strides can help people improve their physical health one mile at a time, that would be a win in my book.
Mental Health: Of the top 10 conditions that impact millennial health, 6 of them are behavioral health conditions affecting mental health and emotional well-being. While Strides should NEVER replace the benefits of seeking out a mental health professional, we know there are short-term benefits to running and being part of a
community.
Performance: Strides is a group coaching program. That means members will be working towards a goal - run your first mile, run a 5K without stopping, finish a half-marathon with a new personal record, etc.
Community Impact: We want to use our platform to advocate for equitable resources to underserved areas. From repaved sidewalks and parks and rec maintenance to adequate street lighting, we want our impact to extend beyond personal goals but to benefit an entire community.
