Nutrition Doesn't Have to Be Complicated
Hey ,
Have you ever wondered, “what’s the best diet?”
With magazine headlines claiming the magical powers of certain foods and doctors on TV telling us to avoid others, it’s hard to know exactly what to eat.
“Can matcha tea prevent cancer?”
“Is organic really healthier?”
“Should I be drinking sea moss?!”
It’s all gotten so complicated and the rise of misinformation makes it impossible to know exactly who or what to believe. If you ever find yourself overwhelmed by nutrition claims, here are three tips to keep in mind:
Nutrition Doesn’t Have To Be Complicated: Is the best diet Intermittent Fasting? Keto? Paleo? Plant-Based? Whole30?
Truth bomb: The best diet doesn’t have a name - it’s balanced, includes nutrients from a variety of sources, and is easy for you to follow. It focuses on creating healthy eating habits: eating fruits and vegetables; incorporating a variety proteins, fats and grains; drinking water; and limiting fried foods, added sugars,
and alcohol.
Food Alone Can’t Prevent or Cure Chronic Disease: Yes, healthy eating habits may reduce the risks of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, colon cancer, heart disease, and other chronic issues but nutrition isn't the only factor. Other determinants, including stress, social and economic factors, physical environment, and genetics all play
a part.
To be clear, healthy eating ABSOLUTELY plays a significant role in our health, but there are no super foods, quick fixes, or magic diets to prevent or cure disease.
Not All Nutrition Advice Is Created Equally: Fitness trainers/coaches, wellness influencers, even MDs can provide general nutrition education (like this email), but we can’t provide nutrition therapy or prescribe specific meal plans.
If an influencer, magazine or famous doctor makes a nutrition claim that sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If you're looking for credible nutrition professionals to follow, here are just a few of my favorites on Instagram:
, remember, nutrition doesn't have to be complicated. If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed by best selling books and influencers, remember to focus on the basics - building long term healthy eating habits like the ones mentioned above.
