Save the Date: Thursday, March 4th
Hello ,
Want to help City Fit Girls win $10,000? We need your help! A few months ago, we entered the Well City Challenge and I’m excited to share that we’ve been chosen as a finalist in the Well City Challenge Pitch Competition!
What is the Well City Challenge? A social impact challenge addressing Philadelphia’s millennial health and mental health challenges. Of the 100 ideas submitted during the open-call, 15 community solutions were chosen to
participate in incubator workshops and a pitch competition!
The challenge was inspired by the 2019 Blue Cross Blue Shield Health of America report “The Health of Millennials,” which found that millennials are suffering from more physical and mental health challenges than previous generations, including double-digit increases in 8 out of 10 top health conditions.
So what is the idea City Fit Girls submitted and will be pitching? It’s called Strides and it will help runners (new and experienced) from all over the city get affordable access to expert run coaching, neighborhood group runs (when group runs return), and a training portal where members can access training plans, audio guided runs, workout videos,
and more.
We believe that the coaching portal and program that we’re developing will appeal to runners of all abilities and non-runners who may be on the fence about incorporating running into their routine. Our goal is to make running less intimidating and show people that adding a few short runs (or walks) into their weekly routine may improve some of the health conditions highlighted in the Health of Millennials report.
Here’s how you can help: The virtual pitch competitions produced by the Economy League will take place over the course of three days. Each day will center around one of the three focus areas: Community & Social Connection, Food & Nutrition, and Mind & Body. During each pitch competition, the panel of judges will select a winner to be awarded $10,000 and the audience will choose the "People's Choice Award" winner with a prize of
$7,500. All winners will also move on to an accelerator to further develop their idea!
I hope you will come out to the Mind & Body Pitch Competition on March 4th a 5:15PM EST to vote for our pitch and help us make this idea a reality!

On The Menu: A Few Dishes To Spice Up Your Week
This week, we're going with BBQ Lentils, Harissa Chickpea Bowls and Shrimp. None of these dishes really scream winter but each of them will work well on your menu and will give you some leftovers if you're prepping for one.
Our Workouts for the Week: A Little Bit of Everything
Strength Club: We're kicking off the week with Upper Body - building on strength from last week and jumping (literally) into Total Body on Tuesday. Tuesday's session incorporates squat jumps so get ready for a good time. This week, we'll be meeting for a Zoom session on Saturday at 10AM. Lookout for the
sign-up link in the app and Facebook group. Not a Strength Club member yet? Join today.
What We're Journaling and Meditating On
"It's not what we have in our life, but who we have in our life that counts." - J.M. Laurence
What does it look like to strengthen the meaningful relationships in your life? Is there anyone you'd like to re-connect with? Is there anyone you'd like to check in with this week?
The news cycle was dominated by snow and the Super Bowl this past week but there were still a lot of great podcasts and articles to pique our interests. Here's what we're reading and listening to:
A Quick History of Environmental Racism [Podcast]: This is a quick listen (13 minutes) but breaks down what environmental racism is and highlights a North Carolina community fighting to get a hog farm to stop polluting the air and local water sources with pig poop.
How To Be Mad: "Anger is a fuel that’s dangerous when out of control. But managed well, it can energize you to identify and confront problems"
The Gist: Last week, a friend told me about a sports podcast and newsletter written by women for everyone to enjoy.
Thanks for reading City Fit Girls Newsletter #270. We'll see you next Monday! In the meantime, follow us on social media using the links below.
