Hello ,
Last week, I was set to kick off my meditation series on designing the life you want. I spend a lot of time researching content and prepping the structure for these sessions so it's usually important to stick to the plan.
With the news of the deadly attack on the Capitol, I knew that participants would be coming into the session with a heavy heart and I had to acknowledge the collective trauma we were experiencing. Although I wanted to keep everything the same, I had to read the room and adjust accordingly. I had to give myself permission to change my mind.
It didn't feel like the right time to discuss our plans for our future. Instead, we honored our past by reflecting on what helped us build the strength and courage that got us to today.
The session turned out better than planned and I received good feedback that showed changing course was the right decision.
While this may sound like a no-brainer for some, changing your mind or changing plans does not come as natural to everyone, especially controlling types or people with perfectionist tendencies. Given the circumstances and everything that's happening in the world, I highly recommend that you give yourself permission to adjust as needed. This may look like:
- Taking a personal day at work even though you never take days off.
- Posting about politics on social media when you usually only post recipes or running tips.
- Giving your employees, students, or kids more grace on a project or assignment.
It will look different for everyone but , you'll know when you need to give yourself permission and sit in the discomfort of change.
If nothing else, the first week of 2021 was a reminder that not everything goes according to plan. And that's okay. Let's work together to adjust and adapt without being hard on ourselves.
