, You Can Make A Difference
Hello ,Â
Â
This week, we've invited a member of the City Fit Girls' community to write this week's intro. Marybeth Gillian has been part of City Fit Girls for as long as we can remember. We believe her story has the ability to help a lot of people so our hope is that you read it and share it with others. - Takia & Kiera

"Inspire. Uplift. Motivate. Encourage" is the motto on my favorite City Fit Girls shirt. I always thought that perfectly encompassed the community of City Fit Girls. During my four years in Philly, the highlight to my week was showing up for group runs at Dilworth Park on Wednesdays. I arrived at my first group run by myself and left knowing that I had found a place where I belonged.
Â
What I did not know was how much the motto on my City Fit Girls shirt would help navigate my grief from child loss. I am the mother of three beautiful, sweet children. My middle child, Maisie, died from a methadone overdose from a stray pill at a neighbor's home when she was 9 months old. The grief our family experiences every day is so heavy.Â
Â
We will always parent Maisie, and one of the many ways we choose to do that is by giving to others. We give by educating families on poison prevention and supporting places that bring children joy, such as museums and summer camps. We created programming with a childrens' play museum to distribute tickets to families experiencing medical hardship.
Â
Our family is creating a donor advised fund, known as the Purple Light Project, to spread Maisie's light and laughter in the world. Our hope is to uplift families dealing with loss or medical hardships and to keep families safe.Â
Â
I encourage you to:
- Do a safety check of your home. Are all medications stored up and away? Take your medications over a sink and one pill at a time.
- Add Poison Control Center's number to your phone: (800) 222-1222.
- Visit www.purplelightproject.org. Learn more about Maisie and consider giving a gift.
Â
The work done through this endeavor will not be Maisie's legacy, it will be her life's work.
Â
Â
Sincerely,
Marybeth Gillian
