Ever since leaving my job back in February, I find myself struggling with distractions throughout the day. I’m one of those people who need a lot of structure in order to focus. It doesn’t matter how many calendars, agendas, to-do lists and productivity apps I implement, I can’t seem to shake this habit.
Anyway, the last thing I want is the idea of unfinished work hanging over my head during the holidays. This weekend, I only want to focus on Christmas movies, cookies and hot chocolate.
In an attempt to reduce some daily distractions, I decided to get rid of two pieces of “low hanging fruit”: any unnecessary email and my phone.
- I unsubscribed from every marketing email who’s only purpose is to sell me something. (I kept newsletters that occasionally sell but brands like Nike and Chipotle 🌮 were on the chopping block). Goodbye, inbox anxiety.
- I began leaving my phone in a different room to avoid the temptation to reach for it during the day. (I’ve also been leaving it in the living room overnight to help with sleep).
While these two actions won’t solve all of my problems, I know they can help me at least make it through the week with less distractions so that I can focus on the things that really matter to me this weekend and into the new year.
So , this week I have two questions for you: If you’re someone who also gets easily distracted, how do you plan to focus this week? And if you’re someone who doesn’t struggle with them, tell me your secrets! I’d love to hear from you.
