Good morning,
It’s been two weeks since George Floyd was murdered by police in Minneapolis. Two weeks since our cities have been flooded with protesters demanding justice for Floyd and calling for an end to police brutality in the United States.
Although two weeks may feel like a long time, it’s not. This is just the beginning of a very long battle to topple the systemic racism that’s been in place for the last 400+ years.
If you can’t make it to a protest and/or are looking for other ways to get involved, here are three ways to use your voice right now:
Justice for Breonna Taylor: Although the officers in the George Floyd case were charged for their crimes, the officers responsible for murdering Breonna Taylor, a 26 year old EMT, have not been charged with a crime. You can learn about here case and demand justice for Breonna at #JusticeForBre.
Contact Your Local Reps: Philadelphia Mayor Kenney has proposed an increase in funding the Philadelphia Police Department while DECREASING funds in community based non-violence programs, social services and the Police Advisory Commission (an organization that provides police oversight by civilians). This is not okay. If you’re in the Philadelphia area, you can email your City Council rep using this email draft provided by Freedom to Read (scroll to bottom of the page to find your council person). | Not in Philly? Start here.
Demand More: Lastly, we can continue to pressure corporations to publicly denounce racism AND share what they plan to do about racism in their businesses. Ask that they commit to making their spaces more inclusive, provide fair wages and equal advancement opportunities for Black employees, and take steps to make their staff more diverse. If they can’t make a commitment to be better, you can take your money elsewhere.
