Good morning ,
This past weekend, I hosted City Fit Girls Strength Club's first Zoom workout. I usually record workout demos on my patio so it was a no-brainer to do the session out there...or so I thought. As people joined the call, my WIFI and video connection began to disappear. I remember asking, "can you see me?" and someone responding, "you look like a grey triangle". Great. 🙃
I hurried to move indoors only to begin losing sound. Kiera jumped in to save the day (thank you!) and I missed the warm-up and most of the strength portion of the workout. Luckily, everyone who participated were kind and understanding. By the time I got connected again (from a different device), the workout was almost over.
The reason I'm sharing this experience has nothing to do with the actual workout experience and everything to do with how I responded to it. Normally, a situation like that would get me worked up, but this time around I remained calm. I felt sad for not giving our members the best experience, but I didn't beat myself up about it or let it ruin the day. Instead, I shifted my focus on what I could do differently the next time, and I
have my new meditation practice to thank for that.
For the last three weeks, I've been participating in Kiera's free Meditative Mornings that take place Monday-Friday on Instagram. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not really good at meditating. My mind wanders a lot but instead of beating myself up, I accept it and shift my focus back to my body and breathing. I've gotten so used to "messing up" at meditation, shifting attention back to the task at hand is becoming my default
response when something goes wrong.
, have you tried meditation? If so, were you "bad" at it, too? One of the best tips I learned from Kiera was to leave expectations behind. I stopped expecting to feel relaxed, or "zen" and just focused on being in tune with my body. I can never tell if meditation is "working" in the moment, but the Zoom issue was the perfect example that my practice is doing exactly what it is supposed to do.
If you'd like to give meditation a try, you can join Kiera's meditations at 8AM on Instagram Live. If that time doesn't work for you, apps like Headspace and Calm are a great place to start too.
