Raise your hand if you ever skipped steps while doing things like building IKEA furniture 🙋🏾♀️
Whether it’s skipping the directions before putting together your PAX wardrobe or realizing you were supposed to soak those beans overnight, missing a step (or two) usually results in nothing more than a minor inconvenience.
Still, there are times when skipping basic steps or fundamentals can lead to negative consequences.
, take running and fitness as an example.
In an industry dominated by “hacks” and “quick fixes”, many people find themselves working towards goals that they’re physically and mentally unprepared for. Sure, you can run that half-marathon on 4 weeks of “training”, but you’re likely to feel burned out, get injured, or underperform on race day.
Even when we understand the potential drawbacks, we skip steps and ignore the fundamentals because we’re in a rush, sometimes unintentionally, to finish. Our brains crave the pleasure and rewards that aren't found in the process, but that doesn't mean we should skip the process altogether.
The enchiladas taste better when the beans are soaked overnight and you’ll feel better on race day when you’ve spent months building strength and endurance to carry you across the finish line. I don't make the rules, but I know they work.
This week, I challenge you to immerse yourself in a process you've been avoiding. Start small:
- Read the entire recipe before you cook.
- Fold your clothes as soon as you take them out of the dryer. 😅
- Take time to learn a new skill.
Trust me, , I know this is easier said than done but the benefits of slowing down outweighs the impacts of rushing through the process.
