In 2014, Kiera and I went for a run on Forbidden Drive. We met two runners along the way and one of them, Rachel, captured a photo of Kiera and I. The photo was a staged celebratory high five and it’s still one of my favorite photos to this day. Here’s why…
Back then, we were both pretty new to running and had no idea where it would take us. We had just completed our first half-marathon and learned that even though running long distances was hard, running was actually becoming more enjoyable.
For me, the photo represents what I’m capable of doing when I’m consistently running - connecting with new people, building community, feeling happy, and having fun.
When people think about the role Strides plays in the running community, fun is the first word I want to come to mind. That’s why we’re excited to kick-off a brand new season of training with you all.
For our final Q&A in partnership with HOKA, we wanted to share some insights on what we’ve been up to and what you can expect from us.
What races are you looking forward to this year?
Kiera: Now that Broad Street is done, I’m looking forward to Mayor’s Cup, the Philly 10K, Philadelphia Distance Run, and maybe the Philadelphia Half Marathon.
Takia: I’m looking forward to Run Fest, Mayor’s Cup, the Philly 10K, and the Rothman 8K.
What can we expect from Strides for the rest of 2022?
Takia: Strides will continue to be the hub for free or low-cost run coaching. This summer, expect more blog posts, free training plans, and resources to help you become a stronger runner. We’re also going to offer more in-person activities like group runs, race meet-ups, and workouts!
Save the Date: Mayor’s Cup is August 13, 2022 - we’d love to have you join our team!
What is your vision for the Philadelphia running industry?
Kiera: I would like to see Philly running events become more reflective of the demographics of the City. I really enjoy the Broad Street Run because you see so many people from different backgrounds in terms of race/ethnicity, pace, and body size. I’d love to see that same range of diversity across all race events of all distances.
Takia: I think Strides can help with that 😏.
