A few years ago, I was deep in work and thought I had very little time to think or do anything else. After venting about my concerns, Takia asked me what activities I enjoy doing for pleasure.
She specifically asked, “what brings you joy?”
I tried to think of some answers but felt stumped. Sure, I enjoyed going to the movies, eating out, taking fitness classes, etc., but I didn't feel a real connection to those activities during that time.
I was so focused on what was going wrong in my life that I couldn’t think of meaningful activities that brought me joy.
, have you ever found yourself more focused on life's struggles than life's pleasures? If so, you are not alone - in fact, Takia shared with me that she's actually dealing with this right now. Yes, the tables have turned…😔
The good news is there is a way out. For me, it started with creating a list of activities. I used whatever free time I had to try new things, even if it meant going alone. I attended virtual jazz concerts and spent more time in nature. There was a lot of trial and error but in the end, it was worth it.
Today, I can name at least 10 things that truly bring me joy including: keeping plants alive(!), meditating before the sun comes up, running or hiking the trails, talking to loved ones, and surprising my little cousins with money on Cashapp.
This week, I encourage you to think about the simple pleasures that bring you joy these days. If you need some ideas, we've provided a few links below.
P.S. That's a picture of my step-mom visiting me after two years and being in complete awe of my thriving 30+ plants (while teaching me a thing or two!). 🥰
