Hi !
Would you believe me if I told you that I almost didn't apply for the job because I didn't think I would get it?
When the position was announced, I read the job description and thought it perfectly covered the work I've done for the last 10 years. However, thanks to imposter syndrome, I quickly went from "this job was written for me!" to "this is too big, I can't do this."
Have you ever experienced this back and forth conundrum, ? Have you ever psyched yourself out of a job, promotion, first date, or long run because you didn't think you were capable but deep down you absolutely were? This happens way more than we'd like to admit.
Imposter syndrome isn't something that can easily go away but you can control it by managing thoughts and taking action in the direction of your dreams.
Similar to the job example, I had the same hesitation about running longer distances again. After my ankle injury in November, I could not imagine myself running more than 3 miles. Fast forward to this past weekend, I ran 5 miles (and some change!).
, imposter syndrome is real and instead of suppressing it, let's embrace it. When limiting thoughts arise, the trick is to do whatever you need in order to still achieve your goals. Here are some suggestions:
- Visualize yourself achieving the goal
- Get (and stay) prepared
- Trust the process
- Don't believe your thoughts; believe your past achievements, loved ones, and dreams.
Lately, when imposter syndrome creeps up I remind myself of this mantra: I Can. I Will. I Must. And then it's go time from there. Is there a mantra you'd like to repeat when you need it most? I'd love to hear about it.
P.S. Congrats to all the runners who finished the LOVE Run Half Marathon or 7.6K!
