Easier Said Than Done But Worth It Every Time
“Life happens. Adapt. Embrace change, and make the most of everything that comes your way.”
Hey ,
Over the weekend, I missed a scheduled run and felt pretty bummed about it.
I was on week two of running consistently (after taking a few months off), and started experiencing pain in my lower back. I really wanted to stick to my training plan but I had to choose between taking an additional recovery day or potentially making the pain worse.
A friend reminded me of a simple rule: "don't make it worse than it needs to be." Simple, right? So, I took more rest days than normal and gave myself permission to shift my schedule. I wondered, why wasn't this my initial reaction?
, we tend to expect things to always go according to plan. When this doesn't happen, we feel a wave of negative emotions (disappointment, doubt, fear, etc). Even if we know something will always happen out of our control, we rarely acknowledge or plan for that reality.
Whether it's a project at work, decisions in a relationship, or a roadblock with training - we are constantly reminded that we just can't control it all.
Although everything won't go according to plan, you can remind yourself that the best way to move forward when challenges arise is to be adaptable and shift your perspective.
Project timeline needs to be extended: What else can I/we accomplish with this extra time? What new problems need to be quickly solved due to this change? And how can I be most helpful here?
Bad weather scheduled on a run day: Do I have the proper gear to run in all weather? Where can I run indoors? Or when is the next day of clearer skies?
I ended up resting on the day I was supposed to run and my lower back felt much better because of it! It felt so good that I decided to join Strength Haus the next day for their kettlebell workout - and it went great. Not only was my lower back happy to get a break from running, but I got to workout with some friends!
, here's your friendly reminder to focus on what you can control and be adaptable with things you can't control.
P.S. If you got into the Broad Street Run, congrats! Now the hard work begins. If I could give one piece of advice for your training: accept that there will be times when you need to change plans but know that it doesn't mean your entire training is doomed - adapt and keep it moving!

You’ve been doing what you need to do to take care and protect yourself. But I’m glad this step was positive and healing for you ❤️" - Emilia C.
