Hi ,
When I was recovering from an ankle injury back in November, I had a lot more "down" time on my hands. I knew how easy it would be to mindlessly scroll social media so I decided to pick up reading again.
At the start of last year, I set a simple goal: Read two books each month.
Life happened and I only read one book every few months towards my goal but then I rolled my ankle and that changed to a few books every week. Who am I even? 😳
I picked up reading again because I couldn't do Strength Club or Peloton rides but to be honest, this new pass time has made me feel alive again.
I know that sounds a bit dramatic but hear me out...
After two years in a pandemic, it's been hard to be my energetic self. With Goodreads, I found a new community of readers online who inspire me and give me something to look forward to.
My energy has shifted in a positive way and I can't stop thinking about what I read. For the first time ever, I immersed myself into fantasy, sci-fi, romance novels and more. I feel close to the characters, I'm more curious, and some books literally take my breath away.
, I recognize that not everyone has time to read multiple books in a week. But, if you're still with me - I'd love for you to join me in reading something every day.
Whether you commit to one book a month or one article every day, reading has benefits that I know you'll love - it increases vocabulary, empathy, and brain connectivity.
If you're willing to try, here are some tips and resources that worked for me:
- Set a goal AND be flexible when needed. Last year, I told myself I would read 25 books but only made it through 5 books by October. With the injury, I read 10 more books bringing me to 15 total by the end of the year.
- Discover new genres. Right now, I will pretty much read anything. I'm really enjoying fantasy because it's a good escape from reality.
- Join the library. Buying books can be expensive. Joining the library is a great way to support a public space and save money.
- Listen to audiobooks. Some call this cheating, I call it maximizing your time 😏.
- Take notes. This is a great way to retain information and get your creative juices flowing.
- Join a book club.
, if you are inspired to set a reading goal for 2022, I'd love to hear about it. Feel free to reply to this message or track your progress with me on Goodreads.
